Sutton Mountain

P1010858You don’t drive all the way Mitchell, Oregon to do just one hike, so we decided to do another hike on the way home. Sutton Mountain turned out to be a good choice, as it was short, steep, and had awesome views of the surrounding Eastern Oregon bumps. With the rain that fell the night before, the path was a sticky mud that accumulated on the boots, and trekking pole tips…was kind of comical at times. Instead of taking the route in the guide book, we crossed the drainage and headed straight up the slope to a ridge called Carroll Rim, where we found neat rock bands made of ancient basalt columns. We continued up the ridge to the high point of Sutton Mountain. The sun was out, and it was warm…so we stayed here for a while before heading back down. This was a great choice for a hike, on the way back to town.
