Spire Rock 7-21-13

P1020591After a good night’s sleep at the cabin in Detroit, we were able to sleep in a bit, before all rising by 8:00am. Leaving the cabin by 9:00am…and on the trail by 10:00am. What a beautiful walk in the forest this is…to the base of Spire Rock. Spire Rock is situated in the Mount Jefferson Wilderness, just about 2-miles from the trailhead. The actual climb starts with a short thrashy scramble to the base of the route…which can be a bit sketchy just to get to the belay spot. I gave this lead to Chris, knowing he’s chomping at the bit to start his trad leading career…hoping that he’ll embrace this adventure type of climbing. This is a single pitch climb, using about 40-meters of rope. Chris led the pitch, carrying the second rope, to the top. All others prusik’d up, then I was belayed while cleaning the route. This was a great, bug free summit, with awesome views of Mount Jefferson and the surrounding area. After pictures, gawking, and just plain foolery, we decided to rap down. After that stupid rap off Washington the day before, this rap was perfect…
A quick hike back out and we were headed for home…but not before a quick dip in Detroit Lake…AAHHhhhh….
