Bacon Peak…
Been on my list for a while. It’s one of those peaks that doesn’t get climbed much, mainly due to the remote nature and the navigation challenges. I’d attempted Bacon back in 2013 but was chased back by the weather. Been wanting to get back ever since. This time the conditions were perfect…
Pretty straight forward climb. Nothing technical this time of year. Very scenic making your way under Watson Peak to the saddle, with big views of Mount Shuksan and Mount Baker in your face. Always a good view of Bacon Peak too. Once over the saddle you need to pay good attention to the navigation aspect of the trip, and find the 4900’ saddle…a lovely camp spot.
The next morning we dropped the 800’ of North Cascades thrash, before the 3000’ boulder ascent to the snow dome, then a quick rock scramble to the summit. Pretty straight forward route. The worst part was the 800’ ascent back up the total thrash to camp…brutal!
We packed up camp and moved it back to the main saddle, making for a nice hike out the next morning.
Another great adventure with my lovely wife Deb, and Chris Wilson.
