The forecast called for sunny and warm with a slight chance of sprinkles in the Cascades… I haven’t been to Schreiner Peak for a long time, so that was my objective. This time I would use the Dickey Creek trail up to the ridge, then take the ridge out to Schreiner Peak…then down the north ridge to a sub ridge back down to Dickey Creek where I would catch the trail back to the trailhead.
Got a late start and left the trailhead at 9:30…days are long so no biggy. The hike along Dickey Creek, below Big Slide Mtn, and past Big Slide Lake was quite pleasant. Partly cloudy and pretty warm when the sun was shining. After gaining the ridge I was able to get the awesome views east and west, the sprinkles had started too… As I looked to the west I could see the darkness heading my way. Thinking I had enough time to tag Schreiner Peak, an hour and a half away, I started up the ridge. No sooner than I topped the next hill and got my first glimpse of Schreiner, the thunder began, and the rain started to fall. After about the third wave of thunder overhead I decided to bail and get off the ridge. I didn’t want to turn around and take the trail back (most of you know what I think of trails), so I dropped down to Lake Lenore and back up to the ridge that heads north back down to Dickey Creek.
This ridge is 1.5 miles x 3000’ elevation loss…and a total Rhody thrash. Took me two hours to go that 1.5 miles. All the while it rained… I was wiped by the time I got back to the Dickey Creek trail and still had to go another 3.5 miles…at least it was a trail 🙂
Fun solo shit!!
