Did the full drop of Duncan Creek last Sunday, from Railcar Falls back down to Duncan Creek Road. This tour had a lot of variety….waterfalls, slippery rock, log jams, down climbs, slides, swimmers, and people. Fun way to spend a 90+ degree day…in the water. Team was Deb, Keith, Ally, and Jon….oh, and myself.
After a 2-mile x 1100′ gain hike up to the road, we drop in here at the bridge over Duncan Creek…
Discovering that the bridge is actually a recycled railcar…hence the name of the first waterfall “Railcar Falls”
Looking up the first tier of Railcar Falls…
Deb rapping the second tier of Railcar Falls…
Ally rapping the second tier of Railcar Falls…
Looking down Duncan Creek…A junky mess! This section not worth doing again…
Navigating down stream on slippery rock…
Deb rapping the low angle upper “Slide Falls”. Probably could walk this one except the bedrock is so slippery….
This is where Devils Club comes from…
Looking up from the bottom of Slide Falls…
Ally rapping the first set of Quad Falls…
Deb swimming in the cold pond at the bottom of the second set of Quad Falls…
Fun slide…
With the occasional log jam down-climb…
Did you guys walk down the whole creek. If ye did not there is another set of slide falls downstream from the upper slide falls. Russ Jolley used to lead hikes to slide falls which he Called Apron Falls. I opened up the area so I know the area real well. I named Quad Falls and there may even be five falls in that section. I hike in there all year. When the Creek is high I Cross West Duncan on a log just upstream from where Duncan and West Duncan merge. Just before Duncan goes under the Bridge is private. .6 of an acre is private. Sometimes I use a path just uphill from the private lot to get to the trail.
Yes, we dropped in at the railcar bridge and walked (rappelled) down to Duncan Creek Rd. A very beautiful drainage. I didn’t see five fall at Quad, but sometimes what I down-climb some might call a waterfall.
Last weekend we dropped West Woodward, another beautiful drainage with some nice falls….
Karl, GREAT report and photos.
What’s up with the funky anchor with the tagline / quick release gizmo?! Looks pretty cool.
It’s called a “Fiddle Stick” That, along with a stone knot is a really cool releasable anchor…and the best part is you leave no trace 🙂
Looks fun! Good job!
Fun shit!!
