French Dip – First Descent…
Noticed this drainage two weeks prior while exploring Martin Buttes Falls. It had a bit more water flow when we saw it then, but it had more snow melt above it too. We still had to walk the road a bit because of the snow, but only about ¾ mile.
Wow! What a fun drop! Thrashy at first but after the first couple of raps, the drainage was scoured down to bedrock. I lost count of raps after about 6, but the tallest falls (French Dip Falls) was 110’ tall.
This is a fantastic early seasonal drainage, but probably slows to a trickle in the dry season.
Today’s team, Myself, Keith, Wade, Kendra, Andy, and Kaitlin.
Two weeks prior I took this pic from Marten Buttes Falls…across the French Creek canyon…
Park here and hike on and off snow for .75 mile…
Looking down rap 2…still a bit thrashy
Partially down, looking up at rap 3…
Looking up rap 3, a 200′ low angle walk with two short drops at the top…
Rap 4, another low angle walk down slippery bedrock…
Looking across canyon at Marten Buttes Falls…
Kaitlin near the bottom of French Dip Falls…
Wade at the middle of French Dip Falls…
Just when we thought this may be the last falls….
Then another 200’plus low angle slippery bedrock walk with a short drop at the top…
Whew! I’ll stick to Table Rock and others like it…’cause I have to.
