Whitman Trail to Hall Ridge 11-8-20

Whitman trail to Hall Ridge…

Always a good workout. Not much mileage but a good short huff. We were curious to see the fire damage up around the Tumble Lake basin. For the past few years this trail has been a mess due to the tree thinning that has gone on without much clean-up. Well, no more mess! The trail tread is surprisingly visible and easy to follow. Today we had snow starting at about 3000’, and lost the trail at about 3500’. By the time we hit the road the snow was a few inches, with 6” deep at the summit of Cooling Tower Rock.
We had good views of the surrounding Tumble Basin rocks such as Dome Rock, Elephant Rock, Tumble Rock, and Needle Rock. Sardine Mountain came out for a bit too.

Nice day to explore this area…

Trailhead…

The mess from the past few years of thinning is gone…!!

No need for flagging on this trail…never was IMO…

Lots of these burned out stumps with deep holes from the burned roots…

In the snow now at about 3000’…

Sun coming out…

First glimpse of Whitman Rock…

Surprised no tracks on the road yet…the snow is only a few inches deep.

Dome Rock, Elephant Rock, and Tumble Rock…

View of Tumble Lake Basin…and beyond.

Martin Buttes and Boulder Peak…If it were clear you’d see Battle Ax above them all…and Mount Hood on the horizon.

Heading back down the ridge…
