Whychus Rock (Squaw Rock)…
It’s been a few years since we’ve been up here. Always an enjoyable mini adventure. One can see this pinnacle from as far north as just coming up from Warm Springs, and as far south as just south of Redmond. The area in general, has so much rock scrambling, we can always find something to do out here.
Today we climbed Whychus Rock. It’s a two-pitch trad route called the Spiral route. There are a few tricky moves, but mostly goes at maybe 5.6, but that’s only the few tricky moves. Most of the two pitches are 4th class scrambles.
The summit bolts are in good shape, and it’s always a good idea to bring your own webbing or cordage because the elements really beat it up. We installed some new black webbing when we were there… We also cleaned up the old tat that was there. The bolts and rap chain, mid-way down, were also in great shape. Somebody tore down the summit cairn that was up there for years, but IMO, that was a good thing.
Another great day out with my sweet wife, Deb.
Starting out on the cow trails…
The block to the left is called the Tasmanian Devil, and has a couple nice short face climbs…
Looking down on Mendenhall Ridge, at some sketchy climbs, including The Poplar and The Sapling…
Nearing today’s objective, Whychus Rock (Squaw Rock)
A look east, at Smith Rock State Park…
A zoomed in shot of Smith Rock…looks like another busy day.
Last look at Whychus Rock (Squaw Rock), before the short hike back to the truck…
Mendenhall Ridge rocks, and some cascade volcanos in the distance…
