Wolf Rock…
This scramble has been on my list for a while, especially since I’ve moved to Oakridge. Tim Olson sent me an invite and I instantly accepted. We took a 8×30 rope and a few pcs of protection just in case we got off route.
Turns out the scramble route is pretty straight forward and easy to follow. After climbing to the summit ridge, we elected to stay on the ridge crest. Doing so, brought us to a sketchy downclimb, so since we brought the rope, we rapped 40’, off a tree. Continuing to the true summit for a break before heading back down.
Heading down we elected to traverse below the tower we rappelled off. Traversing under the tower was the crux for me. It was definitely a “No Fall Zone”.
The climb down, where we ascended, was not as bad as I feared. It was a quick descent.
Fun day out with Tim.
Drove past the trailhead to get a couple of views of this gigantic rock… This is a view of the high grade technical climbing routes…

The extreme east end of Wolf Rock…

After climbing a couple hundred feet…

Would suck if the rock was wet…

Looking over at the true summit.

Tim with The Three Sisters in the background.

After scrambling the ridge crest, we rapped 40′ off this tower…

Looking west over the summit ridge. If you know where to look, you can see The Smokestack, a fun adventure climb.

Looking east at the end of the Wolf Rock summit ridge, and The Three Sisters in the distance.

Looing south over the Wolf Creek drainage…

This was the crux for me. The black line was sold rock with tiny pebbles and hardly any features…and a lot of exposure.

Descending wasn’t as bad as I thought it might be.

What a great way to stay in shape. Fresh air and great views.
Hi,
What is 8 x 30 rope mean? Thanks
Hi Lou, 8×30 is the size of rope. It’s a old glacier rope I used when mountaineering. 8m x 30 meters (aprox 100’lg). It’s lightweight and nice to have when needed.
