Cerro Frio (Cerro de La Muerte Trail)…

While in the mountains we hiked through the tropical forest jungle to a high point, Cerro Frio. The summit has many radio towers, and also a road one can walk just short ways from the main road. Instead, we hiked up from the valley where our Airbnb was. Our hike was about 10 miles x 3600’ gain. The summit sits at about 11,380’. The first couple thousand feet is through what appears to be old growth forest with gigantic tropical trees, large tree ferns, and so many different tropical plants, many of which look like the house plants back home. As we got closer to the summit the trees got smaller, there was more hanging moss, and more grasses.

On our way back down the trail, we were treated with the view of a whole troop of monkeys, making their way, way up near the top of the tree canopy. I was pretty cool to watch them navigate from tree to tree. Some had little ones riding on their backs… Getting pictures was a challenge.

Fun hike and good exercise with my lovely wife, Deb.
