Olomana Trail (Three Peaks) 1-9-22

Olomana Trail (Three Peaks)

Olomana Trail is on the island of Oahu. Its’ a heavily used trail, at least to the first peak. Most people stop here. Some continue to the second peak, and few continue to the third peak. We decided to do all three. To be honest, the hardest part about this hike was finding a legal place to park. It’s crazy, one of the most popular hikes on the island (at least to the first peak) and there is not trailhead parking. One of the reasons this trail is so popular is that the views are incredible.

Getting to the second peak from peak one is an easy and exposed (on either side) hike. Getting to peak three from peak two is a really fun scramble. Mostly class 3 scrambling with a couple stiff third class moves. There are ropes all over the place but I only found a couple that were needed. The scramble between peak two and three is best done when the rock is dry.

Fun way to start a month long Hawaiian vacation with my lovely wife Deb.

A view of peak one (Olomana Peak)

After a mile of road walking we hit the trailhead… The trail is muddy and slippery for a bit, till we gain the ridge…

Once we hit the ridge, the trail conditions improved.

There several places that ropes have been placed to aid in scrambling the rock…

A view from Peak 1. If you zoom in, look to the right and see our parked van (circled in red)

Dropping off Peak 1, on our way to Peak 2 with Peak 3 in the distance…

Deb scrambling rock on the ascent to Peak 2…

On Peak 2 looking back at Peak 1. See the people on Peak 1?

Peak 3… Looks worse than it really is…

One of the only time I used the ropes… Descending Peak 2

Deb descending Peak 2…

Looking back at Peak 2 and Peak 1…

Ok, I touched the rope here too…but what the heck, it was there…

A nice view of Kailua and the Pacific Ocean…

More downclimbing…

A cool keyhole formation half way up to Peak 3. If you zoom in you’ll see a yellowed flower lei at the top of the formation…

Peak 3 summit register…

Last look before heading back…
