Puu Waawaa Crater 1-19-22

Puu Waawaa Crater…

We are now on the Kona side of the big island of Hawaii. We decided to do an easy hike today, sleeping in and starting late. This hike is mostly on road, which a good portion is paved. Of course since we started late, we would have full sun the whole hike… We did do a little cross country back down off the crater…the cattle didn’t seem to mind.

From both the west and east summits, there were great views of both Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea…both with visible snow at the summits.

Nice road walk…

Puu Waawaa Crater is the hill up ahead…

Mostly through grazing land…

We saw lots of feral goats…

Heading up inside the crater…

…to the west summit. A far away view of Mauna Kea with snow at the summit.

Oh wow, I can think of many peaks and mountains I’ve climbed that deserved a sign like this…

At the eastern summit of the crater, with a far away view of Mauna Loa with snow at the summit.

unconcerned cattle grazing, very close to…

…this open pit. As you can see, very dangerous for the cattle. Very disturbing and disappointing to see this on public land. FILL THE DAMN HOLE!!

A short hike up the road…
