Rooster Rock Climb 5-24-18

Made a quick run up Rooster Rock after work.
1.5-hours to drive there, 30-minutes to get both Deb and I to the top….still worth it though. Had some great wildlife sightings…including an Osprey catching a fish, then being pursued by a Bald Eagle…until the osprey dropped the fish and the Eagle snatched it out or the air and flew away. Moments later the Osprey dove and grabbed another fish, flew back to the nest just below us and gave the fish to its mate that was sitting on eggs in the nest.
We stayed up until the sun dropped behind the clouds then rappelled off the rock and went to McMenamins Edgefield for dinner and drinks.

Short walk along I84…

Yes, I trust my belayer…even if she does have her eyes closed 🙂

From the top, looking west down the Columbia River…as the sun lowers.

A camera shot through the binoculars…of an adult Osprey sittting on eggs. Pic by Deb…

Across the Hwy, looking up at Crown Point and the Vista House…

Deb rappelling Rooster Rock…

Last look at Rooster Rock before heading home…

I’m a life long Oregonian who grew up in Portland (my great, great, grand father was Governor William Wallace Thayer). I’ve spent most of my life enjoying the Columbia River Gorge. I first saw folks climbing Rooster Rock when I was a child back in the early seventies. I’ve done my share of hiking 🥾 but never climbed a mountain. My goal is to climb Rooster Rock and it’s on my bucket list. I’m looking to hire someone to assist ?

      Hi Steve,
Are you asking if I’d lead and you follow? If so, I’d be happy to take you up to the top of Rooster Rock. Do you have rock climbing experience…specifically rappelling?

Hi Karl, I would be willing to train and do what ever is necessary to climb Rooster Rock. This is on the top of my bucket list ! I’ve never climbed or Repelled with ropes or spikes. However I’ve climbed on a lot of rocks in the Columbia River Gorge. I’ve also hiked up Mount Hood to Devils Kitchen.

      Hi Steve,
No money necessary, you just need to know how to rappel. I’d be happy to get you to the top of Rooster Rock. I would rather you rappel on your own, but if necessary, I can put you on top belay for safety. If you are serious, please email me, and we can start corresponding by email. karlhelser@comcast.net
