West Onion Peak 5-28-23

West Onion Peak…

West Onion Peak…what the hell. I have been atop of most other peaks in this county, might as well tag this one. Same road in as you would take to climb Onion Peak, except you will cross-country up the hill about 1.75 miles before the base of Onion Peak. Most go up West Onion via an old jeep trail and some boulder scrambling to the summit…like we did. Although on our descent we found a leisurely route back down to the main road. If we do this again, we will ascend the same way we descended. No bushwhack, just stay in the forest, and take the path of least resistance, all the while heading straight for the summit.

Interesting summit. No views because the trees block the views. There is a concrete pad, wiring, and a couple of tower bases that might indicate there was a weather station, lookout, or some type of facility up here.

Great day out, overcast in the morning, sunny but cool in the afternoon.

Couple of miles and we can see the Pacific Ocean. That rock is Castle Rock.

So green…

Mr. Newt crossing the road…

Cross-country through the forest…

The south ridge leading to the summit…

Rigging from the logging days…

WTF?

Concrete slab… Maybe for a fire lookout, weather station…?

Base of a communications tower?

Todays route…
