Badlands (south) 1-2-21

Badlands south…

We looked for a dry area within striking distance from our cabin in Detroit and came up with The Badlands, SE of Bend. Several weekends ago we explored the North side of The Badlands…this time we explored the south end.

We started out from the Flatiron Rock trailhead. Out route took us up the trail to Flatiron Rock. After a quick scramble to the top, we headed east to tag The Castle, Badlands Rock, and South Wall. After that we headed straight for the Three Buttes area…on the southeast side of the wilderness. We tagged the north butte before heading back to the trailhead.
Most of today’s miles were cross-country

Another fun day outside.

Trail from Flatiron Rock Trailhead…

At the top of the first high-point, Flatiron Rock. Looking down into a large gap which is really a large crack from the rock being pushed up….

Here’s a Google Earth shot of Flatiron. See the crack caused by the raising of the rock…

Top of Badlands Rock…

Proof…

…and the Google Earth view of Badlands Rock. Looks like a muffin top… 🙂

Inside the crack… I kept imagining a western movie with horses running though these cracks…

Now the long cross-country to the Thee Buttes…

Arriving at the North Butte…Our Turnaround.

Looking south at the other two buttes…

Looking at the long walk back to the trailhead…

Getting closer…

Nice of our shadow’s to finally join us…

Today’s route…
