Napau Crater Hike 1-23-22

Napau Crater Hike…

Napau Crater is on the big island of Hawaii. Although this hike is called the Napau Crater hike, there are a lot of other things to explore along the way, including the Makaopuhi Crater, steam vents, and lots of lava! A fun hike with lots to explore. If I come back, I’d like to walk through the craters…

Great day out with my lovely wife, Deb.

Hike starts out along the lava bed…kinda wet and cold

As the sun rises and the rain moves on…out comes the rainbow.

A stupid amount of rock cairns…

Mini lava tube…

Looks like the top of a fudge brownie…

Close up of a small piece of Reticulite lava. It’s very fragile and feels a lot like foam. Zoom in for even more detail…

Off the trail there were several steam vents to explore…

Nearing the Makaopuhi Crater…largest of the day.

…so we had our lunch break at the edge…

A view from the other end of Makaopuhi Crater…

We came across the ruins of a factory that made mattress and pillows out of fern frond hair…

Very interesting…

The tree ferns around us today were over 10′ tall…

Crack…

Arriving at the Napau Crater overlook…

Awesome view…

Our track of the hike…
